Repeated Circular Migration: Theory and Evidence from Undocumented Migrants
ثبت نشده
چکیده
This paper contributes to the literature on temporary migration by developing and solving a model of repeated circular migration that accounts for saving behavior. Using Mexican Migrant Project data on undocumented migrants and non-migrants, I estimate the parameters of the model through the Method of Simulated Moments. The intensity of U.S. border enforcement is found to have a significant positive effect on the cost of migration. Counterfactual experiments suggest that an increase in the growth of border enforcement over the sample period would have reduced migration rates in the sample, but would have caused migrants to spend more time in the United States. متن کاملTemporary Migration, Skill Upgrading, and Legal Status: Evidence from Mexican Migrants
This paper explores the extent to which temporary Mexican migrants upgrade their skills while working in the United States. In contrast to Lacuesta (2006), we find that labor market performance in Mexico is positively related to one’s accumulated migration experience in the United States. Self-selection of high-skilled individuals into migration does not drive this result. Surprisingly, while w...
متن کاملChina's "tidal wave" of migrant labor: what can we learn from Mexican undocumented migration to the United States?
"The purpose of this article is to place Chinese labor migration from agriculture within the context of the literature on labor mobility in developing countries by comparing it to undocumented Mexican migration to the United States. The similarities fall within three general areas: the migration process, the economic and social position of migrants at their destination, and the agrarian structu...
متن کاملBorder Enforcement and Return Migration by Documented and Undocumented Mexicans.
Using data from the Mexican Migration Project we compute probabilities of departure and return for first and later trips to the United States in both documented and undocumented status. We then estimate statistical models to analyze the determinants of departure and return according to legal status. Prior to 1986, Mexico-U.S. migration was characterized by great circularity, but since then circ...
متن کاملCervical and Breast Cancer Screening Among Mexican Migrant Women, 2013
INTRODUCTION Information on cervical and breast cancer screening among Latinas in the United States is limited. Even less information is available on screening practices of migrant women who engage in circular migration. We examined rates of cervical and breast cancer screening and the extent to which sociodemographics and other characteristics explain screening practices of Mexican migrant wom...
